Sunrise from the summit of Mount Batur

A night climb to the top of an active volcano, 1,717 m high, to watch the sun rise over Lake Batur and Mount Agung.

Bali

The experience

Mount Batur is an active volcano in Bangli Regency in the north-east, rising 1,717 m inside a wide caldera that holds Lake Batur. UNESCO included it in the Global Geoparks Network in 2012. From the top, on clear days, you see Mount Agung ahead and Mount Rinjani on Lombok on the horizon.

The day starts very early: we collect you between 2 and 3 am, and the climb begins around 4 by torchlight. It takes 90 minutes to 2 hours over volcanic gravel and narrow paths, steepening in the last 40 minutes; it asks for reasonable fitness and nothing technical.

At the summit

You arrive before 6 and sit to watch the sky colour and the mist lift off the lake, with a simple breakfast at the top. The descent takes 60 to 90 minutes and you are back at your hotel before noon, or we continue the day at nearby hot springs or in Ubud.

A local guide is compulsory on the mountain under the rules of the Kintamani trekking association. We arrange a private guide, not a shared group, and a driver waiting at the trailhead.
