The Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel
Half a day
All year; the colours show best in sunshine
At Chamarel, on the south-western edge of the plateau, lies a patch of bare earth in shades from yellow to red, violet and black. It formed over millions of years as basalt lava rich in iron and aluminium weathered, and its seven colours show best in sunlight.
The geopark also holds the Chamarel waterfall, which drops some 95 m from a sheer cliff, a park of giant tortoises and a coffee plantation with tastings. Le Chamarel restaurant, looking out over the coast, is close by, so the two fit into half a day.
Good to know
- The coloured earth is viewed from fenced paths
- Good for children, thanks to the tortoise park
