Moscow in summer: parks, river and metro palaces
Half a day
May to September
Zaryadye Park opened in 2017 beside Red Square, stepping down in terraces that recreate four Russian landscapes: forest, steppe, tundra and river meadow. Its Soaring Bridge reaches 70 m over the Moskva without a single support, with views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil's. From there a private boat takes you along the river.
Then you go down into the Moscow Metro, opened in 1935, whose stations are underground palaces of marble and chandeliers: Komsomolskaya (1952) with its mosaics, Mayakovskaya (1938) and the stained glass of Novoslobodskaya. We take you outside the rush hours.
Good to know
- The metro is among Europe's busiest, so we avoid the rush hours
- The park adjoins Red Square and fits easily into a Kremlin day
