A day in Ayutthaya
Full day
November to February
King Ramathibodi I founded Ayutthaya in 1351, and it remained the kingdom's capital for more than four centuries, until the Burmese army destroyed it in 1767. Its ruins joined UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1991. You see Wat Mahathat, where a Buddha head rests in the roots of a tree; Wat Phra Si Sanphet and its three chedis; and Wat Chaiwatthanaram on the riverbank at sunset. If you wish, we drive you there and bring you back by boat.
Good to know
- Modest dress is expected at the temples
- Midday is hot: go early or late in the day
