Malé Fish Market and Local Market

Malé Fish Market

The fish market sits on the waterfront west of Republic Square, facing the fishing harbour where the dhonis tie up. In the afternoon the boats start returning with tuna, and the pace builds through mid-afternoon as the fishmongers turn whole fish into neat slabs with remarkable speed. Early morning is lively too.

Across the road is the local market: tropical fruit, vegetables, spices and nuts, local snacks such as coconut sticks, and handmade textiles, woodwork and jewellery. A short walk that shows you the country's daily life.
